Welcome to the training page for the Restoration Industry.  As paint system training is much the same as for Automotive & Collision training, refer to that page as well.

Bear in mind that most paint systems are designed for production shops and not for the person who wishes to take his/her time completing a job in various laborious stages.  So some adjustments in approach as to how the substrate is treated and how it is primed must be made to accomodate the length of time required to complete the job.  Not done properly, corrosion can begin to build up underneath primed surfaces that you can't see until sometime after the job is completed, hopefully not at your car show!

A strong recommendation: find the best primers and primer-surfacers that you can, such as PPG's DP40LF for corrosion resistance and K38 for fill.  Stay away from lacquer primer!  Using low cost primer because it's cheaper and it's "just primer" will most often come back to haunt you, especially in a restoration situation.  That's like laying plywood on the ground and then building your house on it because it's "just a floor".
